Medical Kits

There are many levels of medical kit from the pocket first aid kit to the full trauma kit. Each person must decide which kit is best for their situation, needs and budget.

There are a number of web sites listed below that offer various levels of first aid and medical kits. I want to make special mention of a fellow militiaman, Alphie Omega. If you have listened to the Intelligence Report with Mark Koernke you may have heard Alphie Omega talking about the training he was offering and the medical gear he has been selling. Alphie has put out a lot of good information and offers some great training and medical gear. Alphie will also make custom kits for you, just email him for details. Alphie's site seems to be completely gone, links have been removed until such time as the site is back up.

Fellow Freeman Radio host Really O'Reilley has additional medical kit information on his site Really O'Reilley's Patriot Pub.

Blow Out Kit

A Blow Out Kit, also called a BOK, is used for penetrating wounds (gun shot, stabbing, impalement) to stop bleeding and stabilize the casualty. The IFAK kits above include many of the same items as you would find in a Blow Out Kit. There is a good article on making your own Blow Out Kit at EMS1.com as well as list of items to include in a BOK (listed below).

Basic Items
- One compression dressing
- One pair of trauma shears
- Two pairs of nitrile gloves
- One Sharpie marker (preferably a mini-Sharpie)
- One small Ziploc bag
- One tactical tourniquet
- Eight strips of 2" or 3" Tape (100 mile an hour, duct, or equivalent)
- One roll of Paper Masking Tape
Advanced Items
- Two 14-gauge Angiocath Needles (3" or greater in length)
- One size 28 Nasopharyngeal Airway (NPA)
- Hemostatic Agent (such as Celox or QuikClot)

Like Really O'Reilly, I would add 2 small trauma / battle dressings and some plastic wrap. I would put the entire BOK in a large zip lock bag and then put the BOK into a pouch.

One of the best BOK's I have seen available comes from Alphie Omega Training and contains the following items:
1 - 6" Green Israeli Pressure Dressing
1 - 3"x 9" Vaseline Petrolatum Gauze OR 5"x 9" Zeroform Gauze
4 - Skin prep wipes (benzoin) Sterile
2 - 5"x 9" Sterile Combine Pad
1 - ARS 14ga. X 3.25" Decompression Needle Sterile
1 - 3-way Stopcock Sterile and 1 Trojan Non-Lubricated Condom
1 - #11 Disposable Scalpel Sterile
1 - Pair Black Tactical Nitrile gloves
1 - 1" Roll Adhesive tape
1 - Green Chemical light
1 - Molle 7x8 Green Canvas First Aid Pouch
1 - Rubber Band
1 - Nasopharyngeal Airway 28 French
2 - Surgical Lubricant
1 - Sharps Shuttle
1 - NARP S-Roll Gauze Sterile
1 - Quik Clot Advanced Clotting Sponge 50 gram

At $54.95 the price is very good, add in a tourniquet and a couple of trauma / battle dressings and you still have a lower price than the IFAKs or one of the other commercial Blow Out Kits available. On top of that, when you buy from Alphie Omega you are helping support a great person and militia member.

NOTE: Alphie is no longer with us but I have left his kits here for reference.

Basic First Aid Kits
There are many basic first aid kits out there. Contents and price vary greatly, often I am disappointed in the contents I get for the price I pay. Beyond the couple of band aids and some prep wipe types I have always made my own first aid kits, buying the supplies I want and adding them to a pouch or pocket. The kit below is from Alphie Omega, with a cost of $34.95, it surpasses all of the basic first aid kits I have seen in cost and completeness.

Basic First Aid Module
10 - 1"x 3" Plastic Adhesive Bandages
6 - 2"x 4" Plastic Adhesive Bandages
10 - Antiseptic towelettes with Benzalkonium Chloride - personal hand cleanser
4 - Pur-Wraps Sterile Cotton Tipped Applicators 2 per pack
4 - 2"x 2" Gauze Sponges 8 ply Sterile
4 - 4"x 4" Gauze Sponges 12 ply Sterile
2 - 7 1/2"x 8" Sterile Combine Abdominal Pad
1 - 12"x 30" Sterile Trauma Dressing
2 - Triangular bandage 40"x 40"x 57" muslin with 2 safety pins
1 - 4.5" Bandage Roll Sterile 147" 8 ply Sterile (Kerlix)
2 - 4"x 4.1 yards Conforming Stretch Gauze Sterile
2 - 4"x 4.1 yards Conforming Stretch Gauze Non-Sterile
1 - 4" Ace wrap
1 - 36" Grey Splint (Sam Splint style) military
2 - Eye Pads Oval Sterile
1 - 1" Roll Adhesive Tape
4 - Pair Exam Gloves Nitrile colors vary - no choice

NOTE: Alphie is no longer with us but I have left his kits here for reference.

Homemade Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) aka electrolytes
1 liter (about 1 quart) water (clean/ purified)
1/4 tsp salt sodium chloride (Nacl)
1/4 tsp lite salt [Morton Lite salt (this adds potassium K+ for cell/muscle function)]
1/4 tsp baking soda [this adds sodium bicarbonate (the buffer that manages blood/body PH)]
2 1/2 tablespoons (7.5 tsp) sugar (adds energy for cell activity)
2 scoops Countrytime Lemonade (adds flavor/taste)
Add this complete powder mix to every other canteen you drink to maintain energy and hydration in the field under stress not needed as much during light activity

A bit of lemon, fruit juice, unsweetened tea or koolaid (instead of Countytime Lemonaid) often helps to improve the flavor. If a sweet juice is added, reduce the sugar in the recipe some.

I originally heard about this recipe from Alphie Omega. The reason for the Morton's Lite Salt is for potassium - check the ingredients to ensure that the Lite Salt is a 50/50 mixture of sodium (salt) and potassium chloride. Some information out there says for kids under 12 to use 4 tablespoons of sugar due to the 10 teaspoons found in many other recipies being too sweet, the problem with this is that 4 tablespoons equals 12 teaspoons, so is actually sweeter.

You can choose to premix the solution so all you have to do is mix it with water or keep the individual ingredients in their primary packaging and mix it at the time needed. I find it easier to premix the solution, each dose can be kept in a ziplock snack bag or in vacuum sealed bags - in either case keeping the individual dozes together inside a larger (quart) freezer ziplock bag will help keep them dry and will keep them in one place.
